Now that we’re well into Spring, it’s time to start planning that new deck you’ve been talking about building since last winter.
Before your imagination runs away on you, though, be sure and do a little homework first: consult your local building codes, and understand how they apply to your own home. If you’re hiring out the work, collect multiple bids and check references.
But if it’s inspiration you’re looking for, there are many sources out there. A walk around your neighborhood can offer some great ideas (and maybe a few lessons in what not to do), and bookstores or libraries stock some great books that document deck styles.
If you plan ahead, visiting a local home and garden show is another great place and the chance to touch and feel a few prototypes at the show.
And, let’s not forget the Internet. From Pinterest boards to home improvement blogs, a wide variety of styles and budgets are represented. And, of course, there are some excellent resources at some of our member sites: The California Redwood Company, and Humboldt Redwood, Mendocino Forest Products.
